The designer

Mary Benson is a Yorkshire-born designer, dressmaker, and illustrator, shaped by the wild beauty of the North and a lifelong love of making things by hand.

She began sewing as a child, stitching clothes for friends and experimenting with fabric long before fashion became a profession. What started as curiosity soon grew into a life in design, from studying at Leeds College of Art to appearing on BBC's Mary Queen of Shops at just sixteen with her first handmade collection.

After interning with Alexander McQueen, Mary studied Fashion Design at the University of Westminster, later showing her collections at London Fashion Week and in Paris with the British Fashion Council, sponsored by Topshop. Her work has been worn by Corinne Bailey-Rae, Noel Fielding, Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding and others, and she has collaborated with Swarovski, Stephen Jones, Terry de Havilland, Melissa, ASOS, and Tatty Devine.

Yet for all the miles travelled, Yorkshire always called her home.

After becoming a mother, Mary returned north and began building a different kind of business — one rooted not in seasons, trends, or constant production, but in craftsmanship, creativity, and a slower way of making. Inspired by windswept moorland, old stories, folk traditions, music, and the landscape she grew up among, she chose to create clothing with a stronger sense of place and permanence.

The team

Today, Mary works from her home studio in Yorkshire, where every collection begins with a sketchbook, a length of cloth, or an illustrated print. She draws, designs, and cuts each piece herself, with many fabrics featuring her own original artwork. Selected designs are printed in London, while every garment is carefully made in small batches by her trusted seamstress Giovanna, from her own workshop. Customer care, orders and photography are looked after by Stephanie, who works alongside the studio and Mary remotely.

The way we work

Together, we remain a small team, creating clothing slowly and thoughtfully, far from the pace of the fashion industry.

There is no public studio or showroom. Instead, each piece begins quietly in Yorkshire and finds its way from our hands to yours, made with care, shaped by story, and rooted in the North.

Nothing is mass produced. Everything is made to order in small numbers, allowing each piece to carry its own story. These are clothes for everyday moments, special days, and everything in between. Designed to feel expressive, feminine and free.
